Ours To Protect Series (EP 6) Recycling

Ours to Protect is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference.

Today, we’re delving into the world of recycling, what it means for our environment, and how the people of Galway are working to make a difference.

We begin with the pupils of Lackagh National School, who shared with us what recycling means in their lives.

Next, we met with John Tedders, owner, and manager of the popular Galway shop ‘The Filling Station’. John told us about his recycling initiatives and his mission to provide high-quality, eco-friendly produce, all while using only recyclable materials.

We then spoke to the bright students of Brierhill National School, who explained how recycling helps protect our planet and why it’s so important to look after.

Mark Molloy, Enivronmentatl Awareness Officer Assistant, caught up with us after that.

Now it’s the turn of the enthusiastic students of St. Jarlaths College to tell our listeners what they know of the importance of recycling.

Now, as part of the Coimisiun na Mean’s initiative to raise awareness for the importance of protecting our local environment, we were given a special device called an ‘AudioMoth’.

This is a clever little recording gadget which takes short clips of audio from each and every day at different hours, capturing the sounds of the natural world around us.

We took our AudioMoth to a small meadow in Menlo, and what we heard was magical.

From the subtle cacophony of countless different species of birds, honeybees, and field mice, we can be sure that the ecosystems of Galway are well worth caring for.

To help bring those sounds to life for young people, we visited Scoil Bhride in Shantalla to share what we’d recorded, and to hear their thoughts on what they discovered in the soundscape of their home environment.

(From local shops to classrooms and council offices, it couldn’t be clearer that recycling is about more than just sorting waste, it’s about caring for the world we’ve been given).

Ours to Protect is brought to you by Galway Bay FM and the IBI and is funded by Coimisiun na Mean with the television license fee.
