THE HEAT MAP - Day 28: Existential Dread and the calm before the storm.

World Cup Dispatches that won’t let you down.

The screeching halt has officially arrived. After nearly a month of uninterrupted, adrenaline-fueled football, midnight snacking, and absolute havoc wreaked on the sleeping patterns of the nation, the World Cup takes its first collective breath. Sure, we won’t know what to do with ourselves. There is not a single match on the box tonight, leaving football fans across Ireland to look out the window, reacquaint themselves with their families, and wonder what on earth to do with an empty evening. (Can we suggest a nice walk in the balmy weather?)

But while the pitches are quiet, the tournament calculators are working overtime in living rooms from Cork to Donegal. We have officially reached the elite eight, and the remaining bracket is looking like an absolute minefield. Over in Blighty, the sports pages are predictably treating their side of the draw with their usual unhinged confidence, completely oblivious to the tactical traps awaiting them. For the rest of us, tonight is all about figuring out the permutations, examining the wreckage of the Round of 16, and stocking the fridge before the true heavyweight chaos resumes tomorrow.
