The biggest World Cup ever begins in Mexico City tonight.

The iconic Estadio Azteca is famed for the game of the century that saw Pelé tear West Germany apart in 1970 and then 16 years later England were downed by Maradona's hand of God.

Today the ground will earn another place in history as it hosts an opening game for the third time with Mexico taking on South Africa in a repeat of the opening game of 2010.

Tonight will also see the first of three opening ceremonies in each host country before kick-off - with tonight's performances from Shakira and Burna Boy.

Of course the opening of a tournament means a rare media conference for FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

He says it's "unfortunate" that Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry to the United States, and told people to "chill" about the controversial topics that have dominated the build-up.

"We try always to find solutions but then we need to respect that we are not the kings of the world who can rule over governments and police forces and I don't know what.

"We are a sports organisation, we try to do our best with the means that we have."

He also defended the ticket pricing and said how proud he is that Iran will be able to compete amid the ongoing political situations.
