Camogie Association members will vote this evening at 7.30pm on whether players will be allowed to wear shorts as part of the playing attire. A Special Congress will convene at Croke Park, where delegates will be asked to decide if the current rule, which only permits skorts for competitive matches, will be amended. This motion would see players given an individual choice within each team – some could wear shorts, some could choose skorts. It would not be a team choice of what to wear, but an individual choice for each player.
6 delegates are going from Galway tonight to the Camogie Special Congress: Paul Kelly (Chairperson), Sinead Kelly (Secretary), Audrey Carr (Treasurer), Pat Morrissey (Vice-Chairperson) , Sarah Gaughran (PRO) and Brian Griffin (Development Officer).
The Galway county board engaged with the Galway Camogie members over the last number of weeks and carried out a survey. The result at the close of the poll was clear and decisive: an overwhelming majority of members expressed their support for the option to wear either skorts or shorts. This option was expressed by 95% of those who completed the survey. This strong mandate reflects the evolving needs and preferences of our playing members, who seek greater comfort, flexibility, and choice in what they wear.
Galway Camogie Chairperson Paul Kelly said: "As delegates attending the special congress, we each have a responsibility to listen to and represent the voices of those who elected us—particularly our playing members, whose day-to-day experience is directly impacted by this decision. We must respect the democratic outcome of the poll. We, as the Galway Camogie executive, will be voting in favour of the choice to wear either the skort or the shorts."
