Galway legend Michael Meehan has highlighted the importance of connection and community in Gaelic Games, recounting its significance in Caltra’s 2004 All-Ireland Club Final win over An Gaeltacht. Meehan was speaking as part of Solgar’s Golden Moments campaign, which celebrates the passion, excitement, joy and uniqueness of Gaelic Games and what it means for both fans and players alike. It features Meehan along with Cork legend Valerie Mulcahy and Solgar ambassadors, Paul Conroy (Galway football) and Katie Quirke (Cork Ladies Football), with all four sharing their favourite moments from their playing careers and what it means to represent club and county.
Meehan, one of Galway’s most decorated forwards, recounts the club final on St Patrick’s Day as one of the golden moments of his career, and in particular the scenes after the final whistle, having secured a one-point win. “The final whistle blows, and everyone is on the pitch, and it was a sea of green and white. Amazing memories.’
Pulling on the club jersey represented a unique opportunity for the Caltra legend and his team. Meehan reflects on his club career and the importance of connection and community, ‘It’s the neighbours, it’s the brothers and sisters, the cousins. The little pockets of houses on the same road. It’s very local and tight-knit. It is quite special.’
In a recent survey conducted by Solgar, over half (56%) of GAA fans claim that the excitement of being at the game and cheering on their side, coupled with standing for the national anthem before throw-in, are among their golden moments in the championship season. A further three-quarters of fans (75%) say they feel a huge sense of pride and hope when they see their county team in action.
