15 city and county projects allocated funding for National Biodiversity Week

Fifteen nature projects across Galway city and county are receiving funding as part of National Biodiversity Week.

Just shy of €200,000 will be shared among the projects, which range from habitat surveys to green network planning.

The funding has been announced by Minister of State for Nature, Biodiversity and Heritage, Christopher O Sullivan

One of the biggest allocations - €53,000 is going to The Galway City IAS Management & Education Project, while the County Galway Wetlands Survey 2026 - 2028 is receiving €34,500.

Galway City Biodiversity Areas Habitat Survey is getting more than €19,000, while over €16,500 is going toward a project aimed an monitoring and removing the Alpine Newt in County Galway.

Just under €15,000 is going to a county Working with Nature 2026 initiative, with around €10,000 each going to Galway Raised Bogs Bird Baseline and a management project on Invasive Alien Species.

Meanwhile, around €8,000 each is going to a Feasibility Study for Reed Bed & Swale between Bothar na dTreabh and Terryland Pond and the West Connacht Islands Invasive Species
Management Programme 2025-2027.

Other projects to receive smaller batches of funding include:

€6,000 for Continuation of Pilot Hedgerow mapping at Menlo
€4,675.00 for a Green Network Planning - City Tree Map Project
€3,450 for a Preliminary Lagoon Survey of Camus Bay, Connemara,
€2,550.00 for the Connacht Biodiversity Officers Conference on 'Our Road Network - Working for Nature'
€1,062.50 for Ballyloughane Conservation Grazing Project - Botanical Monitoring and Survey 2026
€560.77 for Survey of the Invasive Amphipod Dikerogammarus haemobaphes in the Shannon River System and Public Awareness of Aquatic Invasive Species
