City councillors vote in favour of plans to sell Shantalla Park to the HSE for a permanent helipad

Councillors have voted to sell land in Shantalla to the HSE for a permanent helipad.

The matter was hotly debated for a considerable time this afternoon.

But ultimately most councillors agree that while the loss of green space is regrettable, it cannot trump essential healthcare needs for Galway and the West region.

The sale will be worth 1.8m and that money will be ringfenced for future investment in Shantalla.

Councillor Peter Keane proposed the sale with specific conditions and this was approved 13 votes to 5.

The five councillors who voted against are: Aisling Burke, Alan Curran, Mike Cubbard, John McDonagh and Eibhlin Seoighthe.
