World Premiere of The Lost Children of Tuam film in Galway tomorrow

The World Premiere of the film The Lost Children of Tuam is taking place in Galway tomorrow.

The film follows local historian Catherine Corless, as she discovered there are no burial records for 796 children and babies who died at the former Tuam Mother and Baby Home.

It's having its first screening as part of the 38th Galway Film Fleadh, which began on Tuesday and runs until the awards on Sunday.

The discovery by Catherine Corless began a campaign for justice for both victims and survivors of the home that has had a lasting impact on Ireland today.

Next Tuesday marks exactly a year since the excavation of the site of the former Mother and Baby Home began - with the complex works expected to continue for another year.

To date, 33 sets of infant remains have been found, and excavators believe all of these infant bodies were buried between 1925 and 1961, when the home was open.

Some remains have also been recovered at other sections at the site, but these have been dated to the workhouse era 1841 to 1918.

28 people have given family reference DNA samples, while a further 175 people have enquired about providing samples.

It's written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (The Salt Path, She Said), and the film is based on The New York Times article ‘The Lost Children of Tuam’ by Dan Barry, published in 2017.
