National Senior Outdoor Championships
Galway athletes will travel in numbers to the blue riband track and field event of the season on the domestic calendar, the National Senior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Santry this weekend, with competitors from Galway City Harriers, Craughwell, Athenry, South Galway, West Coast AC , Tuam and Loughrea AC aiming to feature prominently against the country's best athletes. Among those aiming to podium include the likes of Emma Moore of Galway City Harriers over 800m, who has been in fine form this year; the 400m trio of Sean Doggett of Athenry, Cllian Greene and Andrew Egan of GCH, all National title or medal winners in recent years, and the West Coast AC relay squad who always excel at these championships. In the Field, reigning Triple Jump champion Darragh Fahy of Loughrea AC returns to defend his title, while Darragh Kelly of Craughwell in the High Jump and Liam Shaw of Athenry in Shot Putt and Discus will also be aiming high. Events start on Saturday 25th July, and continue on Sunday 26th July next.
World Athletics U20 Championships Selection
Athletics Ireland has announced a 24-strong team for the World Athletics U20 Championships which take place in Eugene, Oregon from August 5th to 9th. Orlaith Mannion (South Galway AC) is chosen to race over 100m Hurdles, and has been in the form of her life this year and a 13.52 clocking in the 100m Hurdles in Belgium last month has seen her rise to second on the Irish U20 all-time list behind Sarah Lavin but ahead of Derval O’Rourke. She will hope to go even faster next month when it matters most. Matthew Newell of Castlegar AC is picked for the 5000m Race Walk, and is another athlete who has excelled over a number of years, winning National medals and setting records along the way
SIAB International
Ireland’s young athletes produced another outstanding performance at the 2026 Schools’ International Athletic Board (SIAB) Track & Field International in Belfast, with both the Irish boys’ and girls’ teams finishing second overall against England, Scotland and Wales. Galway schools and clubs were well represented and among the highlights was the podium performance of Rachel Warde of Clarin College (pictured) and Craughwell AC, who won a superb silver in the 80m Hurdles at the Schools International Championship race. Also impressing was Claudia Coyle of Seamount College, Kinvara, who raced in the Girls 1500m Steeplechase, clocking a fine time of 5:22.99 for 7th overall.
Road Races
Tonight, Wednesday 22nd July 2026 sees the inaugural Mick Molloy 5K Road Race in Oughterard, Co. Galway. This chip-timed event, hosted by Corrib AC & Oughterard GAA, takes runners along a scenic rural route through the beautiful Connemara countryside. With professional timing, refreshments, parking and a welcoming community atmosphere, the race is suitable for all. Race start: 7:30pm. Registration and race HQ at Oughterard GAA Club.
The 40th edition of the famous Streets of Galway 8k, this year backed by Medtronic, and organised by Galway City Harriers takes place on Saturday 8th August next at 7pm in Galway City. A bumper field of 4,000 athletes is anticipated, with the race a complete sell out .
