Galway Bay Seafoods is celebrating 75 years in business, built on a long-standing commitment to quality and family values. The company was founded in 1950 by John Vincent Holland, who began his journey in a shop on William Street in Galway. Where he once lived with his family, above the shop. He sold fruit, vegetables, poultry, and most importantly, fish.
In the 1960s, John expanded into wholesaling seafood at the Galway docks while continuing to operate the William Street shop. The company also ran a smokehouse in Galway, where fish was smoked and shipped worldwide. Galway Bay Seafoods still produces its own brand of smoked salmon, maintaining the same high standards and quality that have been part of the company from the beginning.

By the 1990s, John Vincent shifted his focus to the docks location, renovating it to include a fishmongers. His sons, John Jr. and Noel, carried on the family business, and in the 2000s, they modernised the docks shop while developing additional projects, including a cookery school, deli, and restaurant.
As of 2025, Galway Bay Seafoods continues to wholesale fish and operate its docks fishmonger with a restaurant on site. Continuing its role as a trusted local seafood provider, the company now operates a fish counter at Dunnes Stores in Knocknacarra.
Galway Bay Seafoods continues as a family-run business, with members of the third generation now working in the company. From its origins on William Street to its modern docks location, the business continues to deliver high-quality seafood, while staying true to the values and practices established by John Vincent Holland. The involvement of the third generation ensures that the company’s heritage, knowledge, and standards are preserved for the future.
