This week on Bay Business, Breda Fox is learning all about MartEye, a Galway-based agri-tech company that has transformed how livestock and machinery are bought and sold across Ireland and the UK.

Founded in 2020 out of the Portershed innovation hub during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, it began as a rapid solution to help marts keep trading when ringside sales were no longer possible. The platform combines live-streamed video from the mart ring with a simple app and website that allow farmers to view stock, place bids in real time and complete purchases from their phone, tablet or laptop.
At the heart of the system is MartEye’s digital gavel, carved from Irish ash and fitted with electronics that sync the auctioneer’s actions in the ring with the online bidders watching from home. Since launch, MartEye has grown from a crisis response into an award-winning business used by dozens of marts, facilitating hundreds of millions of euro in trade and expanding into areas such as machinery, land and timed auctions.
