All-Ireland Ladies Football Final Preview - When Galway Last Won The All-Ireland

As we look forward to Sunday's All-Ireland Senior Ladies Football Final between Galway and Kerry, let's go back to the last time Galway lifted the Brendan Martin Cup.

The date was Sunday, the 3rd of October and Galway were in the All-Ireland Final for the first time since 1975 when beaten by Tipperary.

In their way was a Dublin team managed by John O'Leary who were in their second final in two years having beaten by Mayo a year previously.

Their experience of the big day showed as they led by six points after twenty five minutes thanks mainly to points from Angie McNally and Mary Nevin.

Galway looked in trouble but showed incredible character led by their manager PJ Fahy and Captain Annette Clarke and a goal from Niamh Duggan and a Clarke point saw them go in at Half Time just two points down. 0-7 to 1-5.

Inspired and showing no fear, this youthful Galway side took charge in the second half with Captain Fantastic Clarke scoring their second goal with an assist from Gillian Joyce.

Further points from Lisa Cohill and Gillian Joyce kept Galway ahead but the decisive score came eight minutes from time when 18 year old Edel Concannon's goal sealed the win and a historic day for Ladies Football in the county.

Here is the commentary of that famous day twenty two years ago from Ollie Turner and Frank Morris.
