Galway were crowned the 2026 FBD League champions on Sunday afternoon in Tuam Stadium after beating Mayo by a single point in a tightly contested decider. Galway started off much stronger, leading by 2-6 to 0-5 at halftime thanks to goals from Oisin McDonagh and Brian Cogger.
Galway led until referee Dermot Lyons awarded Mayo a penalty with five minutes of normal time remaining, as Jack Glynn fouled John McMonagle inside the penalty area after the initial shot from Fergal Boland had crashed off the post. Adam Barrett slotted the penalty home to level the game, and immediately after, Stephen Coen kicked Andy Moran's side in front.
But just as it seemed Mayo would be returning home from Tuam with the silverware, Padraig Joyce's substitutes, Liam Ó Conghaile and Robert Finnerty, stepped up to swing the game and give Galway the bragging rights ahead of next weekend's National League clash at Pearse Stadium.
