World Relays Selections
This weekend, the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, will be held on Saturday, May 10th, and Sunday, May 11th.
Women’s, men’s and mixed 4x400m relay teams will travel to the championships aiming to seal all-important qualification for September’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
The top fourteen teams in each event qualify for the World Championships.
Cillín Greene (Galway City Harriers) has been selected for the Irish team and won a medal in the mixed 4x400m at last year's championships in Nassau, Bahamas.
He will again be looking to contribute strongly to the Mixed Relays team.
Aaron Greene of the University of Galway and Tullamore AC is selected on the Men’s Relay squad.
Notably, the women’s 4x400m relay team who finished fourth in last summer’s Olympic final in Paris will all travel to China.
Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC), Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport AC), Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Phil Healy (Bandon AC) are also listed for the mixed 4x400m team.
Galway 5km Series

The 2025 Galway 5k series sponsored by EY continues in earnest, with Abbeyknockmoy hosting last night’s race under the command of East Galway AC.
Last night’s event on May 6th featured another win for Evan O'Rourke of Maree AC with a personal best of 15.49, ahead of Paul Kearney and Ger Hartnett of Tuam AC.
First lady was again Grainne Ni Uallachain of GCH with her third consecutive victory in a series best of 18.35, with Caron Ryan second home for Craughwell and Nora McMahon of GCH third lady.
Great Limerick Run

The Great Limerick Run took place last weekend and encompassed three races, a Marathon, a Half Marathon and 6 Mile.
Galway athletes travelled in huge numbers and secured several podium spots
In the Ladies Marathon, Fiona Molloy, based in Galway and a GCH and University of Galway alumnus, excelled in placing second overall behind winner Ava Crean, clocking 2 hours 57 minutes. Neasa De Burca of Galway City Harriers ran strongly to come in next in third, in another sub three hour run, running 2 hours 58 minutes. Ger Cuddy and Louis Coyne both clocked well under three hours in the Men’s event, with 2.45 and 2.5, respectively
In the Ladies Half, Eimear O’Leary was fifth home in 1 hour 24 mins.
The GCH Men’s Relay team came in second in the Marathon Relay, via the squad of Bryan Lalor, Michale Conway, Paul Fahy and Shane McDonagh.
In the 6 Mile race, Jamie Fallon of Craughwell AC ran well to place third man home, whilst Ellen Moran made a strong return to action with fourth in the Ladies race
Galway City Harriers travelled in huge numbers, as part of a fundraiser for Galway Hospice, and in memory of their recently deceased clubmate Jimmy Ward, on a poignant yet memorable day for the club
Galway County Track and Field
This weekend sees the Galway Outdoor Juvenile Track and Field Championships take place in Dangan, at the University grounds, from 10 am on both Saturday and Sunday, 10th and 11th May. Events from U9 -U19 are on the cards. Patrons are reminded to park at the Park and Ride facility at the Corrib Village entrance to the University.
