National Track and Field Championships

It was a very successful weekend for Galway Athletes at the National Senior Championships in Dublin, with Craughwell’s Conor Penney and Loughrea’s Darragh Fahy both taking gold on Saturday.

Penney took gold in the High Jump with a best leap of 2.10 metres with a stunning series of jumping. Clubmate Darragh Kelly secured bronze with 1.95 metres. Penney later added bronze in the testing 110m Hurdles event.

Loughrea AC's Darragh Fahy won gold in the Triple Jump with a best of 13.91 metres, on his second leap, to cap a great season where he has swept the boards at Junior level.

Tuam’s Alix Joyce raced to a superb silver medal in the Women’s 3,000m Steeplechase, with a brave front-running display, while Craughwell athlete, Lauren Kilduff, won bronze in the Women’s 400m Hurdles. Emma O'Donovan, also from Craughwell, finished 7th in the same race.

Other results of note were wins for Galway-based athletes Finlay Daly in the Mens Steeplechase, and Fiona Everard winning bronze in the Ladies 5000m event, both coached by Matt Lockett.

There were some superb displays via Orlaith Mannion of South Galway, who was 4th in the Women’s 100m Hurdles, Liam Shaw 4th in the Discus and Shot Putt, Andrew Egan of Galway City Harriers 4th in the Men's 400m, and Padraig Faherty of Galway City Harriers 4th in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase. Other high rankings were achieved by Cathal Gallagher of Craughwell, 5th in the Men's U20 5000m and Jade Moorhead of Craughwell, 5th in the Women's High Jump.

Streets of Galway 8km

Anticipation is building as the largest ever entry prepares to run the 39th edition of the Blackrock Health Galway Clinic Streets of Galway 8k this weekend

Galway City Harriers Athletics Club, in association with Blackrock Health Galway Clinic, are putting the finishing touches to their preparations for the 39th edition of their annual Streets of Galway 8k Road Race, taking place at 7pm this coming Saturday (9th August) in Galway City

‘Given the resurgence in running, it’s no surprise the event has sold out with our largest entry to date and a capacity 3,500 runners of all abilities taking to The Streets’ says Race Director Brian Bruton.

GCH and their ongoing partnership with City Council, Gardai and an army of club volunteers, are thrilled to be able to allow athletes to run through our fabled city streets passing many of its most famous landmarks. The route starts at 7pm sharp at GTI on Father Griffin Road through the historical City Centre, passing Wolfe Tone Bridge, Merchants Road, Eyre Square, crossing the River Corrib at The Cathedral, passing our University of Galway and Hospital before they race toward Salthill via Dr Mannix Road. The athletes will enter The Promenade at Leisureland before a fast finish along Gratton Road and South Park into the finish at Nimmo’s Pier, where GCH hospitality and after-race refreshments await.

A stellar field has been assembled including the likes of internationals John Travers of Donore, William Fitzgerald of Craughwell, marathon winners Chris Jeuken and Jake O'Regan on the Mens side and Niamh Allen of Leevale, Emily Sisson, a USA athlete and Aoife Kilgannon of Sligo AC. Among the 3,500 race

entrants are 3 athletes completing the race for the 39th time, and people from all walks of life in Galway, and beyond. The event attracts national and international visitors, and large crowds of spectators are expected across the 8km route.

Age category prizes are available, and there is a beautiful souvenir, a Streets of Galway Hi-Tech T-shirt for all online entrants.

Race HQ is at the Claddagh Hall, Nimmo’s Pier, Galway (H91 A6Y6). The race starts promptly at 7pm on Saturday, 9th August 2025. The race is AAI-certified and permitted and is a sellout.
