Galway Golfer selected for McEvoy Trophy next month

The Bridgestone Boys International Order of Merit resumes in April with the Peter McEvoy Trophy at Copt Heath Golf Club outside Birmingham (17-18 April).

The Golfing Union of Ireland have selected a squad of six for the McEvoy Trophy, a prestigious early-season boy's U18 event. The six players named in the GUI squad are: Joseph Byrne (Baltinglass), Max Kennedy (Royal Dublin), Odhran Maguire (Slieve Russell), Aaron Marshall (Lisburn), Tom McKibbin (Holywood) and Luke O’Neill (Connemara). The Peter McEvoy Trophy is played over 72 holes with the top 40 and ties progressing to the final day. There are two previous Irish winners of the event: Gavin Moynihan (2012) and Mark Power (2016). Meanwhile, an Ireland U16 selection will contest a Quadrangular Tournament at Troon Darley from 20-22 April. Ireland will play against Wales and The Netherlands as well as the hosts, Scotland. The six players selected for the tournament are: Eoghan Cassidy (Kinsale), Thomas Higgins (Roscommon), Josh Hill (Galgorm Castle), Ewan McArthur (Massereene), Sean McLoughlin (Co Sligo) and Daniel Mulligan (Laytown & Bettystown).

Ireland Boys Selectors John McGrath (Royal Tara) and Kevin Murray (Tramore) will accompany the squad at the Peter McEvoy Trophy.

These matches form part of the GUI’s High Performance programme for Junior Golf in 2019. The GUI’s High Performance Programme at
underage level is supported by Sport Ireland, Sport NI and The R&A.
