Wheelchair hurling is now promoted in the G.A.A. by “Games for All” at the National and Provincial levels, with a very successful Interprovincial series well established, and indeed at the International level, where teams from Ireland have been involved in Shinty and International Floorball Competitions.
The Galway” Games for All” have organised a Wheelchair Hurling/Camogie Hurling exhibition game and are hosting an event in Clarin College to promote awareness of the sport .
The event will be held on Sunday, December 7th, from 10 to about 2pm in Clarin College, Athenry.
This will be an unusual and entertaining event with Galway Hurlers and Camogie Players, All Star Guests sitting in the Wheel Chairs to play a Munster and Connacht Wheelchair representative teams.
The Promotional Day is being spearheaded by Connachts Trainer of Wheel Chair Hurling and Connacht Camogie Development officer David Cunningham with the help of “Games for All” personnel helping out.
The idea is to promote awareness of wheelchair hurling camogie as a fun event with a different twist on competitive sport.
The wheelchairs and special hurls will be there with teams of six 1 goal keeper, 2 backs 1 midfielder 2 forwards.
The Basic rules include, backs and forwards stay in their own halves while the Midfielder can travel anywhere.
The goalie stays in the square, not allowed to leave, and no one can play the ball in the square, only the goalkeeper.
