The City of Galway is to host the 21st European Masters Non Stadia Championships in 2028.
The Championships, for athletes from the age of 35 up, will feature events in road running, cross country relays, race and nordic walking and will be held during the month of May.
Galway won the right to hold the championships beating off rival bids from Austria and Italy.
The handover took place yesterday after the closing ceremony of the 2026 games in Catania Sicily where Galway athletes performed very well.
Tina McDonagh and Ian Egan (both West Coast AC) won six medals over three days of competition.
Tina won individual silver in 10km road race and team Gold, silver and gold in xc relay, mixed 55 yrs team and ladies w45 relay respectively. She also won team gold in the half Marathon.
Ian won silver in the mixed Cross country relay and Tuam AC athlete Baiba Varsberga won bronze in the 10km race walk.
There was also gold in the Mixed Relay with Mixed xc relay for Stephen Monaghan (Mayo AC), Vanessa Sallier (Rathfarnham AC), Ian Egan (West Coast AC) and Martina McDonagh (West Coast AC).
