Galway United moved three points clear of Athlone after a dramatic late comeback saw them claim all three points at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday night.
Alexis Strickland put the champions in front two minutes before half-time, and when Kellie Brennan was dismissed on 67 minutes Athlone faced the second half a player short and clinging to a one-goal lead.
Galway turned the screw and were rewarded in the 88th minute when Remini Tillotson levelled it under the lights. Three minutes into stoppage time Niamh Farrelly rose to head home and send Eamonn Deacy Park into celebration.
The 2-1 win for Galway United hands Athlone Town their first defeat of the 2026 season and sends Galway United three points clear at the top of the table with eight games played.
