Irish Paralympians Orla Comerford and Shauna Bocquet will be in action this Saturday, July 5th at the 50th edition of the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. Competing in the Women’s Para Athletics 100m Mixed Classification and 800m T54 respectively, both athletes are part of a strong international field as Para Athletics events feature alongside the Diamond League programme.
The 50th edition of the Prefontaine Classic promises to be one of the most competitive and historic yet, bringing together an exceptional lineup of talent. This year’s meet will feature 48 Olympic and Paralympic gold medallists, 98 medallists in total, and 14 current world record holders.
Comerford will compete in the Women’s Para Athletics 100m Mixed Classification event at 20:00 (Irish time), aiming to defend her title from last year. The reigning champion, Comerford claimed victory in the 2024 edition of this race with a strong 12.13 second performance. Since then, she’s continued to raise the bar, winning a bronze medal at the Paris Paralympics with a time of 11.94 seconds followed by a stunning personal best of 11.87 seconds at the Oslo Bislett Games last month.
Her race is one of four Para Athletics events included in the schedule alongside the prestigious Diamond League program. The Women’s Para Athletics 100m Mixed Classification goes off at 20:00 (Irish time) followed closely by Shauna Bocquet, another Irish Paralympian, competing in the Women’s Para Athletics 800m T54 at 20:14 (Irish time).
Two decorated Paralympic champions bring elite pedigree to this field. Léa Bayekula (BEL) is the reigning T54 double gold medalist from Paris 2024, having claimed victory in both the 100m and 400m finals. Meanwhile, Tatyana McFadden (USA) one of the most successful wheelchair racers in history added to her extraordinary Paralympic tally with a silver in the 100m T54 in Paris, marking her 20th medal across seven Games.
