Following an energising and inspiring Opening Ceremony on Thursday evening, where President Catherine Connolly shared a heartfelt message of good luck with the athletes, Day 1 of the competitions delivered moments of excitement, pride, and celebration - offering a brilliant glimpse of what is yet to come.
One athlete who didn’t let the weather dampen his determination was Ruari O’Toole from Spiddal, who placed third in kayaking for Team Connaught.
Speaking after the race, Ruari’s parents Ann and Paddy O’Toole who volunteer with Galway Special Olympics Kayaking Club, said:
“We were so happy to see Ruari in the water today. We are delighted that he is happy more than anything else.”
There are 67 athletes representing Galway in the Summer Games this year, with four athletes from Galway Special Olympics Kayaking Club participating. Over 6,500 family members and friends are expected to attend the Games throughout the weekend, cheering on their loved ones across a wide variety of sports.

Competition began on Friday across venues in Dublin, Meath, and Kildare, with athletes competing in athletics, badminton, basketball, bocce, bowling, equestrian, football, golf, gymnastics, kayaking, swimming, and table tennis, alongside a Young Athletes Festival and the Motor Activity Training Programme.
Day 2 of competition was just as successful, especially for Lakers Social and Recreation Club, based in Bray.
Club member Una Hogan delivered an impressive performance in the 50 metre Freestyle race, securing a silver medal on the day.
Another important moment that took place on Day 2 was a surprise birthday celebration for club member Rebecca McAuley. Rebecca, from Coolock, is participating in the bowling at this year’s Games.
