The FAI Schools Post Primary Schools National Cup competitions reached a conclusion last week following eight months of competitive action.
FAI Schools organise National Cups in the boys’ and girls’ section, with 8 divisions apiece catering for small and large schools tailored for Under 20, 19, 17, 15 and 14 age groups.
Each provincial branch will also offer an extensive local league structure co-ordinated by dedicated teachers on a voluntary basis.
The series of competitions provide football to approximately 550 post primary schools nationwide with over 80,000 students participating annually.
Out of the 8 National Boys Cup competitions, we had winners from Cork (2), Dublin (2), Donegal, Mayo, Galway, and Limerick all snatching gold.
A remarkable story for two Donaghmede schools in Dublin, who share the same campus, both claimed their first ever National Cup titles this season in the space of a few days. Gaelcholáiste Reachrann clinching the John Murphy Senior ‘B’ trophy, while Grange Community College netted the Junior ‘B’ Cup (small schools).
Loreto Community School, Milford were crowned Minor ‘B’ Boys Cup Champions, 50 years on since their only other boy’s National title. The girls did claim the First Year Girls National Cup back in 2009 when Amber BARRETT was lining out for the students.
Likewise, out of the 8 Girls Cup winners, we seen a geographical spread with Galway (2), Donegal, Offaly, Cork, Clare, and Kerry all claiming top spot.
It was an outstanding campaign for both Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair, Dun na nGall and Glenamaddy Community School, Galway who were the only schools to retain their National crown in the Senior ‘B’ Girls and Junior ‘B’ Girls divisions respectively (in the small schools).
It was also wonderful to see some new faces make history in 2026, with 50% of the Cup Champions, all recording a first ever in FAI Schools competitions. In the boy’s section, Crescent College Comprehensive SJ, Limerick, and St. Cuan’s College, Castleblakney put their schools on the map with historic trophy lifts in recent weeks as well as the two Donaghmede kingpins.
While in the girl’s section Holy Family Community School, Rathcoole, St. Brigid's Presentation Secondary School, Killarney, Gallen Community School, Offaly, and St. Michael’s Community College, Kilmihil all making big names for themselves in schools’ football in their short tenure of playing girl’s football.
