Clunetech Kilkenny Stars defeated University of Galway Mystics in a challenging game in Kingfisher on Sunday, 28th December.
Despite Mystics’ best efforts, including five three-pointers, Kilkenny Stars came out on top.
Facing an improving Kilkenny team, Mystics knew they had their work cut out for them. A poor start by Mystics left Kilkenny leading after the first quarter by 15-6.
Mystics found new resolve and dug deep in the second quarter, led by Emma Glavin, Kara McCleane and Lala Lopez, winning the quarter by 19-14 and narrowing the gap to 25-29 at half time. Unfortunately, Kara McCleane's game ended during the second quarter due to injury.
The third quarter was a tight affair, with Mystics growing in confidence, their pressing and defence forcing the Kilkenny team into mistakes and turnovers. The third quarter ended with the game still in the balance at 45-52.
In the fourth quarter, with three of the Mystics players fouled out of the game, it was too steep a hill to climb, and Kilkenny Stars finished strongly to take the win with a score of 53-74. Stephanie Davis was their top scorer with an impressive 25 points and 13 rebounds, while Mystics top scorer was captain Emma Glavin, with 21 points.
University of Galway Mystics next game in Domino's Women's Division One is away to Dublin Raiders on 10th January at 5.15pm.
