Irish Schools Track and Field Championships

This weekend features one of the highlights of the athletics calendar, as the Irish Schools Track and Field Championships takes place on Friday and Saturday 29th and 30th May in Tullamore. A large contingent of Galway athletes will compete across the two-day programme which is always a highly competitive affair. Among those competing are the likes of schools’ internationals Donal Coyle and Orlaith Mannion (pictured) from South Galway, racewalkers such as Savanagh O'Callaghan and Caoimhe Phelan, among others with medal chances from across Galway.

Galway 5km Series

The sixth and final leg of the EY sponsored Galway 5km Series was held in hot summer conditions this Tuesday 26th May, in Craughwell .First home on the night was Oisin Davis of Craughwell AC with a time of 15.04. , with Jamie Fallon also Craughwell second in 15.22 and Jordan Walsh rounding off a Craughwell 1 2 3 in 16.15. First lady home in a fast race was Nora Tierney of GCH in 17.59 who just pipped the long time leader Phoebe Whiteside (GCH), by one second in a dramatic finish, followed by Eimear O Leary also of GCH third in 18.09. The series in its 20th year was a success, with thanks due to the six host clubs, series directors Colm Byrne and Colm McAllen, and sponsors EY , for their great support of one of the most popular race series in the country.

International Meeting Belgium

A number of Galway athletes travelled to the IFAM meeting in Belgium last weekend . Top billing went to hurdler Orlaith Mannion of South Galway AC who raced a superb 100m Hurdles , and won in 13.68 seconds, achieving a World U20 standard in the process. This run was a new best and passed the standard of 13.70 seconds for the World U20s in Oregon this August - . Mannion also won her 100m heat in a huge personal best of 12.01 seconds. West Coast AC sent a number of athletes to IFAM with Leon Ewere impressing over 100m with a heat win in 10.85 seconds and Ben Edeh clocking 47.34 over 400m.
