UG scientists 'mini brain' breakthrough could help Alzheimers research

Scientists at the University of Galway have discovered a new approach to growing mini-brains in laboratories, which could improve research into Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and strokes.

They grew the small blobs of brain cells in a soft hydrogel and introduced cells that can form blood vessels.

They discovered that these cerebral organoids - or "mini-brains" - grew larger with fewer cells dying in the centre of them.

Lecturer in Biomaterial Chemistry Dr. Mihai Lomora led the research team.
