Dr Michael Ryan, former Deputy Director-General of the World Health Organisation, will today reflect on how societies respond to inequality and vulnerability when he delivers a keynote address in Galway.
Dr Ryan will address the COPE Galway 60th birthday gathering in the city this afternoon.
Founded in December 1965 as the Galway Social Services Council, COPE began as a volunteer-led initiative providing Meals on Wheels to older people in the city.
It has since grown into one of Ireland’s leading social service organisations, now supporting more than 3,000 people each year through a range of homeless, domestic abuse and senior support services.
At well as Dr Ryan this afternoon's event will also be attended by former President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina who's a Patron of COPE Galway.
The anniversary event will include the launch of a new historical publication, 60 Years in Galway.
