Several Galway weather stations have been highlighted in Met Éireann's Annual Climate Statement for 2025.
With many named storms making an impact last year, our reporter Sarah Slevin rounds up the 'year in weather' for Galway
From some of the lowest temperatures of the year to the highest wind speeds ever recorded - Galway really was front and centre of some of the biggest weather events of 2025.
Low temperature/ice - January
The year kicked off with orange low temperature and ice warnings, with schools, creches and many other businesses closing just days after returning from Christmas.
A Galway weather station was expected to break weather records early on in the year.
Athenry's weather station recorded the lowest daily air minimum - with a temperature of -7.6 °C on Thursday the 9th January.
Storm Eowyn
We were hardly over that spell of icy weather when Storm Eowyn came along - with Galway this time making both local and international headlines.
A red danger to life warning was issued for all counties in Ireland for the morning of Friday January 24th, with Galway remaining under an orange alert for some time after that.
Galway was expected to break another weather record, as Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel predicted.
And he was right - with Mace Head broke Ireland's all-time wind gust record during Storm Éowyn on January 24, 2025, with a gust of 184 km/h.
It wreaked havoc right across the county, but in particular for Maureen Folan in Carna, who lost her roof to the storm.
After that was a long period of power and water outages for many, over 30,000 storm compensation claims, and a great level of community spirit with emergency hubs set up right across the country.
Honourable mentions
And while that was certainly the worst of the storms for 2025, we still had Storm Amy and Bram to come - both bringing plenty of wind, rain and flooding from October to the year end. ]
But there were also some highs in 2025 - literally.
Athenry's weather station managed to record the highest April maximum temperature on record for Ireland with a temperature of 25.9 °C.
