Councillors have been briefed on the progress on a major upgrade project at Inis Oirr Harbour in the Aran Islands.
In addition, Galway County Council is in the process of recruiting Harbour Masters for Inis Oirr and Inis Mór.
Senior Galway County Council engineer, Tom Prendergast, told the Conamara Area County Councillors that the basics are now in place for a €36m. upgrade at the Inis Oirr Harbour.
All plant and equipment is now on site and that includes a crane.
A Traffic plan is in place and a breakwater will be constructed in the coming weeks.
Dredging and blasting can then take place and that is scheduled for June.
This year’s phase of work will continue until autumn and there will be a recommencement in March of 2027.
There have been calls for this development for many years as landing at Inis Oirr can be difficult, if not impossible, during periods of east and northeast winds.
More extensive ferry travel from Ros a Mhíl, Doolin and Galway has also put extra pressure on the harbour facilities.
