Amnesty International calls for full investigation into mother and baby abuse cases following discovery of remains in Tuam

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Amnesty International is calling on the Government to ensure that all alleged human rights abuses at 'Mother and Baby Homes' are fully investigated following the discovery of human remains in Tuam.

The charity says today's distressing revelations underline the need to ensure that the Commission of Investigation is a meaningful opportunity to ensure truth and accountability for what happened to women and children at such homes.

It's warning that the Commission must not repeat the mistakes of past processes, in particular the Government's response to reports of abuse at Magdalene Laundries.

Amnesty says confronting, acknowledging and dealing with past human rights abuses is essential if Ireland is to move forward as a rights-respecting society.
