Appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála over major sports facility in Athenry

An appeals been lodged with An Coimisiún Pleanála over the refusal of a major sports facility near Athenry.

The project is led by Galway United in association with Connacht Hockey, with the land provided by Luke and Brian Comer, majority owners in Galway United.

This isn't the first attempt to build the facility, with a previous set of plans rejected by county planners in 2022.

A revised effort across a 25 acre site at Mountain South was unveiled last year to great fanfare.

The floodlit complex would consist of two full-size football pitches and a full-size hockey pitch, along with changing facilities, offices, meeting rooms and a gym.

It would cater to Galway United's women's and men's teams across multiple age groups, as well as local hockey teams who have struggled with access to facilities.

But county planners once again rejected the plans last month.

They found the centre would amount to "disorderly and haphazard" development at odds with the existing landscape.

They further noted if granted, it would set an undesirable precedent for future development in the unserviced rural area.

Galway United has now taken an appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála, with a decision due some time next year.
