There's a call for for an effort to be made to get more lifeguards trained in Connemara.
Local councillors were told at their latest meeting that many lifeguards are students who cannot begin working until June.
Connemara Engineer, Naoise Ó Conaola, told the Connemara Councillors at their meeting in Clifden that June the 1st will be the start-up date for Lifeguards at 7 beaches along the Connemara and Galway coasts.
He said this was the usual time given weather conditions.
There were suggestions from Councillors, including Pádraic Mac an Iomaire that an earlier time might be advisable given that a fine spell of weather had come.
Uinsíonn Finn, Co Council Director of Services for Connemara, explained that many of the Lifeguards were students and that they could not begin work until June because of college and exam pressures.
Connemara Councillors Cataoirleach, Gerry King later said that it would be worthwhile to try and get more local people trained as Lifeguards in Connemara.
There would then be local availability of lifeguards and they could be deployed at short notice if a spell of fine weather dawned.
