COPE Galway is being praised for showing how a community-led model can trump a state-led model in helping some of the most vulnerable people in the community.
The organisation has today celebrated it's 60th anniversary, being first founded in late 1965 as the Galway Social Service Council.
It now helps thousands of people every year through it's homelessness, domestic violence, and older persons support services.
And key to that work are the hundreds of volunteers who selflessly dedicate their time to supporting those in need and building up sustainable communities.
Guests at today's event at the Druid Theatre included Michael D Higgins, Sabina Coyne Higgins and former Deputy-Director of the WHO, Dr. Mike Ryan.
John Morley and David Nevin were there to speak to some of those attending - starting with Sabina Coyne Higgins reflecting on the value of the work COPE Galway do.
