Local councillors united at County Hall this week to voice their opposition to a proposed power plant in Athenry.
The facility at Cashla will be run by Bord Gáis Energy - and would be one of the largest of its kind in Ireland.
The site would be located three kilometres from Athenry town, but the final decision rests with An Coimisiún Pleanála rather than Galway County Council.
At County Hall this week, councillors warned it could have a significant environmental impact - and wanted their objections included in a submission from the local authority on the project.
A number of other concerns were also raised, including the potential impact on local schools, increased pressure on roads, visual impact, and possible disruption to emergency services on access roads.
While councillors acknowledged the need for infrastructure and renewable energy, the consensus at County Hall this week was that this development is not appropriate for the local area.
