€79m roads programme for 2026 approved by county councillors

County Councillors have approved a draft roads budget of 79 million euros for 2026.

With nearly 7,000 kilometers of road in Galway, its impossible to make everyone happy.

With this latest allocation of roads funding, an increase of 15% on 2025, the county council aims to deal with the most important repairs and works for 2026.

Some of the notable figures include €4.5 million euros allocated towards the Galway City Ring Road, €4 Million for Traffic calming and paving works on the N83 in Claregalway, 2.5 million going towards improvement works on the R332 at Kilbannon, and €2 million for sections 3 and 5 of the Athenry relief road.

Much of the remaining money will go towards resurfacing, maintenance and improvement works on small sections of 500km worth of road around the county.

There were some ruffled feathers during the meetings, with Loughrea Councillor Geraldine Donohue saying that picking which roads to be repaired is like trying to 'pick your favourite child'

While The 15% increase is good news for Galway road users, multiple Councillors raised concerns about the rise in fuel and material costs due to the ongoing war in the middle east affecting the costs of these projects.

There are fears this could reduce the number of projects that can be completed as the economic climate both here and overseas becomes increasingly uncertain.]
