The Easter 1916 Commemoration organised by Fianna Fáil will take place in the city tomorrow (sun) with Mass at 11am in St Patrick’s church on Forster St. followed by the parade and wreath laying at the Liam Mellows statue in Eyre Square.
Liam Mellows commanded around 700 Volunteers in attacks on Royal Irish Constabulary stations at Oranmore and Clarinbridge, and briefly took control of the town of Athenry.
In November 1922 Eamon DeValera appointed him as Minister for Defence in his anti-Treaty government.
Families of former Volunteers and Cumann na mBan members are invited to attend Sunday's ceremony as special guests.
A special tribute will also be paid to Fr Michael Griffin, from Gurteen in East Galway.
He was a curate in Saint Joseph's Parish who was abducted and murdered by the Crown forces in 1920 during the War of Independence.
Earlier tomorrow morning at 9, there's a commemoration at Castlegar Church at the statue erected to honour the Galway volunteers, many of whom came from the Castlegar, Carnmore, Claregalway area.
Meanwhile, the Sinn Féin commemorations are continuing and at 3pm today Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty will be the main speaker at the Liam Mellow's Monument in Eyre Square
Tomorrow moring at 11.45 (sun) there will be a wreath laying at the Garden of Remembrance in Athenry followed at noon by a commemoration at Athenry Cemetery where the main speaker will be Cllr. Martin McNamara
At 1pm there will be a wreath laying at William Freeney's Grave in Teampall Geal, Athenry.
In Connemara at noon there will be an Easter Commemoration at Teach an Phiarsaigh, Ros Muc where the main speaker will again be Deputy Doherty
At 2pm there will be a wreath laying at Ardbear Cemetery in Clifden
Sinn Fein by-electon candidate Mark Lohan will be the main speaker at both the 3pm commemoration at the
Thomas Whelan Statue in Clifden and the 5pm at Tooreena Cemetery, Tullycross
On Monday at 1pm there's a Commemoration at Loughnane Brothers' Grave in Shanaglish, Beagh where the main speaker will be Galway East TD Louis O'Hara
