Exhibition and book launch to take place at site of Portumna Workhouse site today

A free exhibition and book launch, will take place today as part of the 2026 National Famine Commemoration.

The event is being held at the Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna, from 1.00 - 4.00pm.

The bilingual exhibition presents famine histories from across County Galway, alongside stories of emigration and settlement among over 20 Galway communities and in Minnesota.

A new book, titled: Hunger, Hardship and Relief: The Great Famine in Killimor, Co. Galway, will be launched at the event.

Written by Angela Geoghegan and typography by Nuala Geoghegan, the book documents Killimor’s experience during the famine years and reflects the important role of communities in reclaiming and interpreting their own history.

The afternoon will be officially opened by Cllr David Collins, Cathaoirleach of the County of Galway, and Admission to the event is free.
