Final approval has been given for an Aldi supermarket in Spiddal, following an appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála.
The new shop would be close to the craft village development, to the north-east of the village centre.
There was considerable local objections to these plans - and one key issue raised was the potential impact on the scenic landscape and seafront.
Another common point was how local businesses, which some described as struggling, would be affected.
Some questioned if this Aldi store is needed at all, given the small population of An Spidéal and the multiple supermarkets within a relatively short distance.
Galway County Council gave the green light last July - which prompted an appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála by a group of local residents.
The higher planning authority has now ruled it can go ahead subject to 22 conditions.
One stipulates that all signage relating to the retail store must be in Irish only.
