Galway attention now on County Hall after presidential hopefuls leave City Hall empty-handed

Attention is now turning to Galway County Hall after presidential hopefuls left City Hall empty-handed last night.

City Councillors opted not to give their backing to any aspiring presidential candidates who sought their support last evening.

Only three turned up in the end and all were fashionably late - Diarmuid Mulcahy, Nick Delahanty and Keith McGrory.

While none could be accused of delivering terrible performances, they evidently didn't meet the bar to even secure a proposal from the floor.

A number of councillors did not attend the meeting, some of whom had previously indicated was a "waste of time" due to the quality of the would-be candidates.

Five other local authorities declined to nominate a candidate yesterday - Dublin City, Cork City, Roscommon, Longford and Laois County Councils.

Meanwhile 30 candidates have sought the support of Galway County Council but 13 have accepted the invitation to attend.

The meeting takes place at 11am this morning (Tuesday)

Abbas Ali O'Shea; Matilda Crumlish; Nick Delehanty; Aidan Harrington; Séana Kerr; Diarmuid Mulcahy; Obi Joseph Chikelue; Gearoid O Dubhthaigh; Lucy-Anne O Leary; Walter Ryan Purcell; Cora Stack; Maria Steen and Gerben Uunk.
