Galway County Councillors are adopting a stricter process for those hoping to pitch to the local authority to run for future Presidential elections.
The motion was put forward by Connemara Independent Councillor Tom Welby, with the aim of raising the standard of those coming in to present their case to the local authority.
To run for a Presidential election, a candidate needs either the backing of four local authorities, or the support of 20 Oireachtas members.
The policy sets out that presidential hopefuls would need the backing of four county councillors before being allowed to present to the council, and they would also need to do so in person.
