Galway has 2nd highest planning approvals for one-off homes

County Galway has the second highest number of planning approvals for one-off homes nationwide.

That's according to new figures compiled by BCE Consulting Engineers, based on permissions granted between 2020 and 2025.

Leading the pack is Cork County Council - with permission granted for almost 3,200 once-off homes over the past five years.

But Galway County Council isn't far behind, with the green light given for more than 2,700 homes.

In the past two years in particular though, the approvals have dropped considerably - a situation replicated in many other local authority areas across the country.

The decreases can be down to several factors, including the number of applications submitted, land availability, planning timelines and wider economic conditions.

And it's a very different story when it comes to Galway City Council, which is bottom of the national tables with just 139 once-off homes approved between 2020 and 2025.
