Galway is included in a new 4.3 million euro government programme to protect the Corncrake
It will be led by the National Parks and Wildlife Service working with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine
It will initially operate in 9 key sites in Counties Galway, Donegal and Mayo, and will also support the conservation of a broader range of bird species.
Last year saw the highest number of corncrake territories recorded in 25 years.
250 farmers, landowners and communities across Galway, Donegal and Mayo are now managing land for nature, implementing measures which protect the bird and improve its habitat.
The latest initiative - the Natura Communities for Birds Programme - will see conservation action being led by a locally embedded team
