Galway intercity rail journeys hit a record high last year.

Iarnród Eireann says demand on the Galway-Dublin route surged by over 9 percent to 2.8 million trips.

There was also continued growth on the Galway-Limerick service, which increased by 4 percent to 770 thousand journeys.

Nationally, it was a record year for demand - with 55 million journeys on the Iarnród Eireann network, which includes commuter and DART services.
