Growing opposition to large windfarm near Galway/Mayo border

Communities on the Galway/Mayo border are uniting to voice opposition to a planned industrial wind-farm.

Their key gripe is the fact it's being advanced within the Joyce Country & Western Lakes UNESCO Global Geopark.

The windfarm would be a 13 turbine wind farm in Mayo, on lands close to Glencorrib, a few kilometres from Headford.

Campaigners are keen to stress they're not opposed to renewable energy in principle.

But they argue a development of this scale is not acceptable for a landscape globally recognised for its geological, environmental, cultural and tourism significance.

UNESCO status for Joyce Country Geopark must carry actual weight in planning policy, they say, and cannot just be treated as a branding exercise.

Locals are now looking towards two key developments next week.

On Monday July 13th, Mayo Councillors will vote on a draft strategy that classifies the area as "unsuitable" due to ecological and heritage constraints.

On the same day, An Coimisiún Pleanála is due to issue its decision on the early-stage pre-application case.

Before then though, an urgent public meeting's been called for this evening - and it takes place at Glencorrib Community Hall at 8pm, with local councillors invited to attend. (7/7)
