Labour Councillor Helen Ogbu has been elected as the new Mayor of Galway

It marks a historic day at City Hall, as Cllr Ogbu is the first black councillor to take the chains of office, having also become the first black councillor elected to the local authority in 2024.

In the recent Galway West by-election she also exceeded all expectations, finishing third in the race with almost 13 thousand votes.

Speaking just after her election to David Nevin, Mayor Ogbu said she's focused on three central themes that are personal to her and critical to Galway's future - belonging, young people and community
