Large parts of Galway bracing themselves for another election

Large parts of Galway are bracing themselves for another election as a Bill which paves the way for an Údarás na Gaeltachta election has passed through the Dáil.

The new legislation would increase the membership of the Údarás Board from 12 to 16, with the majority being elected in the Gaeltacht regions.

The election hoardings have been taken down in west Galway but another election looms, in much of the constituency.

Ten members of the Údarás will be elected with Gaeltacht Minister, Dara Callearey, rejecting calls from Sinn Féin for all 16 Board members to be chosen at the ballot boxes.

The Galway Gaeltacht will have the largest number of elected members with 3 seats. The Galway and Mayo Gaeltacht areas were one constituency in past Údarás elections, but the latest arrangement will focus the campaigns on each county.

The Galway constituency takes in Connemara, the Aran Islands, parts of Galway city, and some areas east of the City.

The geography has been controversial in the past with suggestions that areas with relatively little spoken Irish could outvote the leading Irish speaking districts.

And that’s a sure to be a point of contention when the election hoardings appear again.
