Local Councillor Helen Ogbu calls on Bertie Ahern to apologise for comments about immigrants

City Councillor Helen Ogbu has called on Bertie Ahern to apologise for his comments about immigrants

Her call follows an online video appearing to show the former Taoiseach suggesting there are too many people coming into the country, saying he was particularly concerned about those arriving from Africa, and ‘the next generation of Muslims’.

The clip, filmed without his knowledge, took place while Mr Ahern was on a Dublin Central by-election canvas.

Labour's Councillor Helen Ogbu, who's a candidate in the Galway West by-election, says she was dismayed to listen to Bertie Ahern’s ignorant and divisive comments.

She has pointed out that immigrants make an incredible contribution to Irish society. and that our hospitals and our care sector simply wouldn’t function without the contribution of workers from abroad.

Councillor Ogbu added that to hear immigrants being singled out and scapegoated by a former Taoiseach and current member of the Council of State is shocking, and the level of ignorance behind those remarks beggars belief.

The Taoiseach says Bertie Ahern’s opinions on immigration aren’t reflective of those of Fianna Fail.

Micheal Martin added he doesn’t share his former party leader's views.
