Local researchers have found evidence that a new therapeutic strategy may help target compromised brain activity in Alzheimers disease.
A team at University of Galway focused on specific proteins that disrupt normal brain signalling and cause burnout and eventual death in nerve cells.
They took a new approach that differs to conventional treatment, by blocking a specific amino acid that is over-stimulated by these proteins linked to Alzheimers.
It was tested on mice with good results - and Professor Andrea Kwakowsky told Galway Talks the next step will hopefully be clinical trials.
