Local senator says proposed law on theft of worktools should be expanded

A local Senator says a proposed new law that would apply automatic jail terms for the theft of work tools should be expanded.

The legislation is being brought forward by Ardrahan-based Fine Gael Senator PJ Murphy, who says the problem is a scourge that affects livelihoods.

It would see those convicted of stealing tools jailed for 3 years, and those convicted to handling stolen tools get at least 18 months behind bars.

Speaking in the Seanad, local Fianna Fail Senator Anne Rabbitte said it should cover more than just work tools.
