The National Famine Commemorations took place at the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna today.
The commemorations aimed to highlight the hardship endured by people during that time.
Many people were in attendance including Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Minister Patrick O'Donovan and former president Micheal D Higgins.
Our reporter James Varley spoke to Christy Cunniffe, director at the Irish Workhouse Centre:
Taoiseach Micheál Martin says it is "a commemoration of a whole society":
Cathaoirleach David Collins highlighted the importance of remembering Irish history:
A wreath was layed, followed by a minutes silence for the estimated 1 million who died due to the Great famine.
As with all official state commemorations, it concluded with a last post, the Irish Tricolour being raised back to full mast and a rendition of amhráinn na bhfiann.
