The number of cattle in Galway has dropped to its lowest level in 10 years.
Figures from the Central Statistics office show that there were 430 thousand 300 cattle in the county as of June 2025, which is a decrease of almost 19 thousand from the previous year.
The decrease comes as farmers lay heavy criticism on the Mercosur trade deal which would see beef imports from South America increase.
Co Chairman and Livestock representative for Galway IFA, Michael Haverty, says that food security needs to be prioritized to prevent herd numbers from falling further.
